Hitchin-based charity the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research (DHT) has named Georgina Rodgers as its Volunteer of the Year for 2012.
The DHT, the UK’s leading humane medical research charity, carried out a nationwide search across its network of supporters to find its most deserving volunteers and fundraisers.
A DHT volunteer for over 14 years, 69-year old Georgina, a retired care home assistant from Hockwell Ring in Luton, was singled out for special recognition for the time and energy she devotes to the charity including visiting the charity’s head office regularly to help with administration.
She has also added a local radio interview to her list of volunteering achievements, taking to the airwaves to promote the DHT and its work.
Georgina said: “It was quite a surprise to receive the award as it is not something I had even thought I would qualify for. My love of animals means I feel passionately about animal welfare which is why I try to help the DHT as much as I can.”
Kailah Eglington, the DHT’s Chief Executive, said: “Many of our supporters give their time, energy and enthusiasm so generously without any thought of being acknowledged. We value each and every one of them and our award is just one way to recognise these heroes and heroines who really go beyond the call of duty.
“Georgina really embodies everything about being a volunteer heroine. As a charity we must make sure that everything we do delivers benefit and helps us to further our aim to replace animals used in research and testing. Volunteers help us make the most of the valuable resources available to us.”
