Tidy up our town

Is it possible for us to make a difference to our community?

Litter and how little efforts make a big difference to our community – themes on the minds of many people this year. We’ve got lots going on across the UK and around our town, so might now be a good time to smarten ourselves up?

Keith Hoskins and the BID team – mostly volunteers – valiantly work with the Council to keep the town centre tidy and litter-free. In fact, they’re the ones who help local businesses recycle card and paper. Our Saturday night team of Street Angels – more volunteers, this time from within Churches Together in Hitchin – can occasionally be seen sweeping up broken bottles in the wee small hours in the town centre to keep the place safe for us all.

Hitchin Festival begins on 30 June 2012 and – somewhat coincidentally – Recycle Week runs from 18 to 24 June. So we could have a really tidy, nicely cumulative effect on our community just in time to welcome visitors to the music and artistic events around the town.

Once this seemingly incessant rain stops, maybe we could all have our own spring-clean. Hitchin is a great town and if we all take a bit more pride in it, so will our visitors.
