Holmfirth is about to have its very own Film Festival. The First Holmfirth Film Festival will open on Saturday 22nd May in the historic Picturedrome, originally the Valley Theatre. For 8 days there will be lots of opportunity to enjoy classic films, see rare film footage and hear about significant people and events connected with film and televsion from Holmfirth and Huddersfield.

There will be a short film competition,  'Beyond Summer Wine' with the winners receiving 'Golden Compos'. Events will be staged throughout the area and there will be something for everyone including childrens events.

A major fact which not a lot of people are aware of, even those who have lived in the area all their lives, is the importance of Holmfirth in the history of British Cinema. Before the first world war Bamforth, a studio based in Holmfirth, was a pioneer in the days of silent movies and at the time was Britain's answer to Hollywood. Talks about Bamforth and showings of early silent movies will be featured in the festival.

As you would expect, prominence will be given to Last of The Summer Wine which has been filmed in the local area for about 30 years and tribute paid to James Mason, another local celebrity.

BBC film critic Barry Norman, will be showing clips from favourite films and will talk about his encounters with many Hollywood 'A' listers.

Many of the events planned will be free of charge. There's a fantastic programme on offer so check out the website for the full programme listings and for booking information.
