PEOPLE have started to have their say on the future shape of Huddersfield town centre.
Kirklees Council launched a month-long consultation on its Area Action Plan on Thursday with a display outside the former Woolworths building on the Piazza.
The council is looking for comments on its 20-year plan for Huddersfield town centre. Kirklees officers have drawn up suggestions, including building a health centre in the middle of Huddersfield, converting St George’s Warehouse to flats and making some streets pedestrianised.
The Area Action Plan divides the town centre into eight sections:
Retail Heart, based around the Kingsgate Centre
Northern Quarter, including the open market and the bars and restaurants in and around John William Street
Eastern Gateway – the area around Leeds Road, including the sports centre
Civic Area, centred around the town hall and including the courts and council buildings
University Area including the student housing on Firth Street
Folly Hall and Waterside – an area containing offices and manufacturing businesses
Western Quarter – St George’s Square and the railway and bus stations
Stadium Area centred around the Galpharm
Exhibitions will be held across the town centre in the next four weeks.
