Shrek Cast to Launch The New North Academy
Islington, London, 21st March 2012.
The children of The New North Academy today welcomed royalty in the form of Princess Fiona from the West End musical Shrek. The princess was in Islington to help celebrate the recent conversion of New North to one of the first Primary Academies in the borough. Children from all year groups helped Fiona map the journey of New North from Community School to Academy and presented their hopes and wishes for the future to a specially invited audience.
New North, on Popham Road, is one of the first primary schools in Islington to apply and receive Academy status. This was done after a lengthy consultation with staff, parents and the local community. Shortly after conversion, the pupils made a representation to the Board that the school change its name as a way of celebrating this exciting development. Mary McStay, Principal of The New North Academy says. "I am incredibly proud of everyone at The New North Academy for the way we collectively provide and respond to an environment in which our children are safe, learning and happy.”
The Academy will strive to continue to achieve above the national average in levels of progress in English and Mathematics between the ages of 7 and 11 as well as retaining its good with outstanding features as highlighted in their recent Ofsted report.
The Chair of directors, Margaret Ford says "The Academy Trust is delighted with the success of New North's aspiration to achieve Academy status. We celebrate this and all the efforts of the Principal and staff to provide a stimulating and safe environment in which our children can learn."
