College stands up to domestic violence
Kensington and Chelsea College joined forces with a leading charity recently to help raise awareness about domestic violence.
London based charity Woman’s Trust - backed by the college’s Child Care Department - hosted an information day to highlight the plight of women in abusive relationships and offer information to those affected by domestic violence.
Held at The London Lighthouse in Lancaster Road, the day empowered women to take a stand against domestic violence. Kensington and Chelsea College staff were also on hand to provide information about courses and spoke to women about the development of self-esteem and independence through education.
Several students on the NVQ Level 3 Children’s Care, Learning and Development course also offered their services to keep children at the event entertained, leaving mums free to speak to advisors.
Budding childcare specialist Yinka Dedier, was one of ten students that laid on face painting sessions for youngsters at the event. The 20-year-old, studying at the College’s Marlborough Centre in Sloane Avenue, said: “Being able to understand the different backgrounds that children come from is a big factor of the course. By working with a charity like Woman’s Trust we get a greater understanding of the issues facing different families and how best to support the children within those families.”
Woman’s Trust Director, Catherine Skinner, said: “Remaining in touch with the world is important for all of us, but for women who’re experiencing domestic violence it can be a literal lifesaver. Even something as simple as taking up a course can often mean re-gaining self-esteem, developing a social life and making new friends – all factors that can help empower women experiencing domestic violence.”
