Project To Bring Community Of Silchester Together
Local people empowered by restructuring of community work
S.P.I.D. Theatre Company announces its new project Estate Voices. Beginning on 15th January on Silchester Estate, adults from the area around Kensington and Chelsea will get the opportunity to partake in an 11 week programme on how to work with organisations to increase awareness of at-risk estates and local spaces. Participants will explore different routes for advocacy, applying for funding and organising their campaigns on Social Housing, amongst other skills.
The project aims to remodel the idea of community work by liaising with members of the local community to facilitate workshops, providing participants with a tool belt to run their own creative projects, get access to the media and press coverage on political subjects. Estate Voices will bring awareness to spaces in danger of being demolished and support Silchester Estate’s residents as they create new communication channels to strengthen their community.
S.P.I.D. (Social Political Innovative Direct) is based in Ladbroke Grove in Kensal House, a listed estate in Kensington and Chelsea.Their groundbreaking Living History projects and performances have been documented by the BBC, ITV and in National press.
Estate Voices builds on its previous Living History projects that focused on young people dramatising the history of local estates through interactive performances, radio shows, films, oral histories and exhibitions. This will be the first time S.P.I.D. has engaged in running a programme for adults, and aims to build stronger links between the company and the local community.
Helena Thompson, the Artistic Director has said ‘SPID has always been inspired by the passion, wisdom and solidarity of North Kensington's council estate residents - making their voices heard has never been more crucial, now and for the future'
