we came across this diamond of a country hotel by pure chance whilst needing to stay in the local area for a night. I cannot praise the Woolpack Inn too highly. My wife and I were greeted by the very friendly landlord who quickly had us booked in and directed us to our room, which was one of a group of chalet type rooms away from the main Inn at the rear; lovely for peace and quiet, but still with easy and quick access to the Inn through a private door.

The room was super. Wonderfully appointed with everything that we could want and spotlessly clean. Super comfortable beds and Freeview TV, with a full compliment of refreshments, including hot chocolate which went down well when we settled for the night.

The Inn itself was spotless. It has too bars, one for general socialising and one for the restaurant which is fully stocked and excellently appointed, with sitting areas if you want a drink before eating. There is also an outdoor area in good weather. The food was exquisite. We both had the rib of beef, and I have to say I have never tasted beef cooked like it in my 70 years of travelling the world. The home made chips were to die for. The chef is an absolute diamond.

The staff are superb. Friendly yet professional, helpful, polite and always had a smile for us. Nothing was too much trouble, even when we found ourselves locked out of our room after dinner! Don't miss the breakfast either. A typical country treat and still served with a smile.

This is going to be our regular stop-over hotel from now on whenever we need to be in this area.

Well done to the owners, management and all the staff of the Woolpack Inn - you are all a credit to the British Hospitality service.

Looking forward to our next visit.

I am somewhat of a regular to The Woolpack Inn, visiting approximately 2 - 3 times per month for food and drinks. Since the re-opening at the back end of Summer 2014, the service and quality of food have both been consistently excellent. The staff are welcoming and friendly and will try and accommodate customer requests wherever possible. For example, I have quite a fussy diet due to various food intolerances, but this is usually catered for when I ask for ingredients to be omitted.

The food is usually served well within my expected time frames and is always of a high standard and there is a lot of choice and variety to the menu. In addition, the real ales are well kept and seem to be in quick rotation, as I haven't yet been served a pint which I wasn't satisfied with.

The only negative I can think of is that the dining area gets extremely warm and stuffy when busy - even with the windows open. Perhaps investing in some air conditioning would solve this, but honestly, it's a very minor gripe.

Highly recommended if you're ever in the Thrapston & Islip area. Booking is certainly advisable at the weekend.

Very poor meal cold and lumpy despite complain didn't offer any compensation, apart from offer of free pudding. If the first course to anything go by I don't think pudding would have been much cop.
