Customers who sign up in October will only pay £10 for the brown bin plus the service cost of £32.50 saving over £10 on the normal cost for new customers. Existing customers can also get additional bins delivered for free and only pay the service cost.
Jo Duffield Waste Minimisation Officer at the Council said: “More and more customers are joining the service which provides an environmentally friendly way of disposing of garden waste. The collections are fortnightly and the garden waste is sent for composting, turning it into useful soil conditioner. People tell us many reasons why they’ve joined, from those who don’t want to make trips to the tip due to the time it takes or the mess in their car to others who simply enjoy having the bin alongside them whilst they do their gardening. It can then be wheeled to the kerbside for collecting – easy!’
Grass cuttings, hedge and shrub clippings, leaves, twigs and bark, small plants and weeds, cut flowers, windfall fruit and small branches (up to 4-inch diameter) can all be put into the brown wheeled bin which is collected fortnightly from March-November. Residents who join in October will receive at least two collections before the service breaks for the winter. They will still get the full benefit of the service as collections re-start in March 2013 until a year after they first signed up.
Marcus Hart, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Environmental Services said: “‘We’ve seen the service go from strength to strength since it began in 2010. The Crew has won the Let’s Recycle Awards for Excellence, ‘Crew of the Year’ award in 2011 and the National Recycling Awards ‘Team of the Year’ award in 2012. We think it’s an excellent service and hope this gives existing and new customer additional confidence in the level of service that we provide.’
