This summer, there will be a wonderful opportunity to discover King's Lynn's maritime history through its well-preserved historic built environment.
A series of 11 guided walks, led by the King's Lynn Town Guides, and linking True's Yard with The Green Quay, will take people on a tour of the town's riverside streets and buildings revealing secrets and stories from its past as an important historic port and bringing to life Lynn's fascinating maritime history.
Borough Council Cabinet Member Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds explained: "This maritime trail was originally devised as part of the 2010 maritime events. King's Lynn has such an interesting story to tell that we were keen to support The Town Guides, True's Yard and Green Quay with the programme of events as we hope it will be come part of the guided walks programme and perhaps even lead to a way-marked trail through the town."
The first of the guided walks takes place on Thursday, 4 August 2011, leading off from True's Yard at 2pm. Walks will take place every Thursday and every Sunday from 4 August through to 8 September. All walks will start at 2pm with Thursday walks leading off from True's Yard and Sunday walks leading off from The Green Quay.
Local historian and Trust Chairman at True's yard Dr Paul Richards added: "Lynn was a major port for centuries, aptly named "the Warehouse of the Wash, with access to 12 counties through the Great Ouse river system. The town's maritime heritage is both rich and exceptional and as this guided maritime trail will reveal."
