Kofoworola Abeni Pratt was one of a few Black nurses who became part of Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) when it was launched in 1948. Following her return to Nigeria, she later became the first Nigerian to lead that country’s post-independence nursing.
Often referred to as the ‘African Florence Nightingale’- how well does this term capture her life, achievements and enduring legacy?
Kandace Chimbiri, author of The Story of Britain’s Black Nurses will reveal the importance of Pratt’s life to the long yet less-well-known history of trailblazing Black nurses.
The Story of Britain’s Black Nurses traces the fascinating history of sick-nursing from ancient and medieval Africa, through colonization and enslavement, through wars, times of great change and onwards to the creation of Britain’s NHS and beyond. Readers meet many incredible nurses from around the world: talented, skillful, innovative, hardworking, resilient.
