Christmas in the City
Lancaster certainly knows how to do Christmas, and this year’s festivities look set to be bigger and better than ever before. With the emphasis on the culture surrounding our historic city, together with celebrities, Santas, live music and dancing, this year’s Christmas switch on really is a day out not to be missed.
It all starts at noon on Sunday 24th November, when they’ll be music, dancing, ice sculptors, street theatre and even a larger than life snow globe in Market Square. Then, stand well back as over 100 “Santas” take part in the Santa Dash at 1pm. They are all donning their best Santa suit and running for Cancer care until 2pm, when Santa and his Cairngorm Reindeer can be seen at Lancaster Castle. Here the children are welcome to visit Santa in his grotto for a small charge, which includes a festive cookie, drink and gift. At 4:15, Santa will climb aboard his sleigh and together with his reindeer parade down Market Street into the square, where they’ll stay for the “Big Switch On” at 4:30. This year the tree has been sourced locally from the Holker Estate across the bay. It’s a real beauty and will be illuminated by the Dukes theatrical lighting team.
The Bay Live stage will be hosting a packed afternoon of family entertainment throughout the day. Presenters Danny Matthews and Darren Milby welcome Lancaster’s X Factor star Paul Akister back home, alongside new pop artistes Vanquish and Everyoung. There’ll be live performances from top tribute act Queen UK, the NHS 100 Voices Choir, X Factor finalist Lloyd Daniels, and bringing the party to Lancaster this Christmas, 90’s stars S Club Party.
The Bay Breakfast’s Danny Matthews said, “This year is set to be the biggest Christmas Lights Switch On Party, Lancaster has ever seen! We are delighted to be returning with The Bay Live stage and it promises to be non-stop entertainment all afternoon and into the early evening. I hope everyone will be able to turn up again this year to officially start the festive season with a bang!”
Throughout the afternoon Ludus dance will perform their Flash Mob, there’ll be Scrooge from the Dukes Theatre and walking Christmas crackers, as well as performances from Stage Coach and Bay Beat. Moreover, a live ice sculptor will be creating a large Santa out of ice.
Suzi Bunting, Lancaster Bid Manager said “This year looks set to be the best Lancaster’s ever seen. We’ve such a great line up of activities and entertainment for everyone. There will be plenty of bars, restaurant, cafes and tearooms available to select from serving warm winter produce and Christmas cheer during the afternoon and evening.”
Christmas in the City starts with the “Big Christmas Switch On” from noon on Sunday 24th November 2013
