There’s a chance to celebrate the past and enjoy what today’s generation have to offer at the next First Friday events which promote what’s great on the local arts and entertainment scene.
On June 7, The Dukes will be harking back to the roaring Twenties with a special screening of The Great Gatsby while some vintage vinyl will be spun at The Hothouse in Morecambe.
Music of a more contemporary kind will be performed by a variety of young bands during Rock The Square and a gig at Lancaster YMCA while on the same night, local favourites The Convulsions will be playing at The Stonewell Tavern in the city.
First Fridays, organised by Lancaster Arts Partners, take place every month and offer special events, most of them free, to encourage more people to experience the wide variety of arts activities available in the district.
June’s First Friday fun begins at 3.30pm when Lancaster District Youth Arts Partnership present two hours of live performances by up-and-coming musicians and bands. The music moves on to the YMCA from 5.30-7pm. Both these events are free.
Over at The Dukes from 6pm, it’s time to put on your sharp suit, spats or flapper dress and enjoy music from the jazz age. There’ll be cocktails on tap and a vintage clothing stall to browse through all in honour of Baz Luhrmann’s glorious new adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby which is screened at 7.30pm. Music in the bar is free and tickets to the film are £6/£5. For more information, contact The Dukes box office on 01524 598500.
Classic tunes from more modern decades can be enjoyed at Totally Wired’s Vintage Vinyl Disco Night at The Hothouse in Morecambe from 8-11pm on First Friday. DJs Denise Sutcliffe and Michael Duffin will be spinning the discs from the Sixties to the present day while Richard Davis provides projections to transform the venue into a riot of visual imagery. Tickets are £3. For more information, ring 01524 831997.
And there’s more music on offer at The Stonewell Tavern in Church Street, Lancaster from 9.30pm on June 7 when The Convulsions, who describe themselves as mod in dress, punk in attitude, funk in groove and boogaloo in sound, perform a free gig. Ring 01524 388474 for more details.
