New Booklet by Local Author Peter Wade - The Sands of Time
As Lancaster gears up for the 400th anniversary of the trial of the so-called Pendle Witches, a new booklet in the series by local tour guide Peter Wade, "The Sands of Time", looks at strange tales from the other side of the River Lune.
Peter's inspiration came originally from the interest shown by paranormal investigators in Morecambe's Winter Gardens theatre but when he looked elsewhere for tales of ghosts and spirits he found white ladies and headless horsemen in rather short supply. In their place though were a series of stories every bit as fascinating.
Graveyards and some of their more unusual inhabitants seemed to be a good place to start. Then there were the strange shapes of the town's gothic buildings, examples of hidden messages literally carved in stone across thre area, the forgotten meanings of Anglo Saxon and Viking place names still in common use and tales of the lonely road and its halls and hostelries.
So, if you've ever wondered about such things as the meaning of 'Schola Green', how Sambo and his lonely grave came to be so well known, the symbolism of the Winter Gardens' opulent decoration or the stories of the ghost ships that met their end in Morecambe, "The Sands of Time" may offer a few answers.
Copies are priced at just £2 and can be obtained through Morecambe Visitor Information Centre. Other booklets in the series include "Echoes of Art Deco" and "Midland Confidential" about Morecambe's Art Deco heritage, "A Narrative Guide to Morecambe and District" and "Mr Turner's Sketching Tour" about the visit of the artist JMW Turner to the district in 1816.
Peter will be conducting a series of walks around Morecambe during 2012 in which he will 'bring to life' the rich history, architecture and people of the area and the dates will be posted in the 'Events' section as soon as they are released.
