Kibworth publican Andrew Southerden is taking up part of the tarmac of his car park at The Coach and Horses in Kibworth Harcourt, Leicestershire to find out more about his historic pub's past.
The pub will be the Command Centre for an exciting community archaeology project on the weekend of 25-26 July.
Eighty local families have been invited to each dig a small trench in their garden as part of the research for a major new series on English history which will be screened by BBC Television next year.
A team of professional archaeologists led by Carenza Lewis of Cambridge University and TV historian Michael Wood, who is presenting the series, will be based at the pub, ready to go to any garden where finds are discovered.
The Coach and Horses features prominently in Kibworth's history. It's on the main coaching route through the village and at a major junction which connected the neighbouring settlements of Kibworth Harcourt and Kibworth Beauchamp.
Andrew is very excited by the prospect of unearthing information about his pub's past history. With all the photo's from the pubs past adorning the walls, this is an opportunity to ad to it's future history.
In 1834, a 73 year old passenger in a coach passing the pub at about midnight fell off and was killed. His tombstone can be seen today in the nearby churchyard.
