Is researching your family tree something you would be interested in?
Burntwood Library is offering TWO new courses of lessons on how to trace your family tree starting February 3rd.
The first course is for beginners and will be held from 2-4pm. No previous knowledge is needed, but an element of the research is computer-based and some IT skills are an advantage.
The second course is for those who have completed the first course and would like to take research further and will take place on February 5th from 10am to 12pm.
But why would you want to trace your family tree? There are so many reasons why people choose to look back in time:
To learn about an ancestor: maybe you never discussed family when growing up or perhaps you didn’t know your grandparents.
To share history with children: some people feel morally obligated to share family history with future generations.
To discover and have fun: it’s very enjoyable to research and dig up the past.
To understand more about yourself: maybe your ancestor’s attributes could tell you more about yourself. Why do you make the decisions you do, are you reminded by family members that you look like an ancestor.
To identify traditions and places: It is a nice feeling to be able to pass on traditions that your ancestors brought from their native land.
To understand challenges faced: maybe you grew up hearing about the Great War or Depression and you want to find out more about what your ancestors went through. This may even help you handle your own struggles.
To look for relatives – you may find some living descendants and discover what they know about your family history.
