Green Flag, in conjunction with Defra and the National Pollinator Strategy, has presented 19 awards to Green Flag parks in England that have made improvements to encourage pollinators across towns, cities and the wider countryside.
Lichfield District Council, that manages Beacon Park, was delighted to be one of the 19 authorities to be named a Bees’ Needs award-winner.
Councillor Andy Smith, Cabinet Member for Leisure & Parks, said: “The team at Beacon Park is really passionate about biodiversity and work to attract more pollinators, including bees, to the park.
“In 2014 they created a poppy meadow, which has flowered beautifully for the last two years. They also work to encourage more insects to the woodland, golf course and community garden, by planting native trees, wildflowers and plants such as nettles, buddleia and lavender, along with leaving piled up logs and building bug hotels.
“It is great that this commitment to helping bees and other pollinators has been recognised by Green Flag and a big well done to the team and park volunteers for this award.”
From April 2017, Beacon Park will be running monthly bee and butterfly surveys.
