Renovation begins for heritage canal route

As part of the project to restore the route of an important heritage canal through Lichfield District, Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust is starting preparation work in Darnford Park this July.

The work, which has already got underway, includes creating a temporary car park for visitors, so the existing car park next to Ryknild Street can be used by contractors while the work is carried out. The team will also remove a number of trees and sections of vegetation, divert a sewer through the park, and create an environmental mound to provide a sound barrier against the A38.

These works are necessary so that a 150 metre stretch of the Lichfield Canal can be built through the park. This will eventually link under the A51 Tamworth Road with the Borrowcop Locks Canal Park section of the canal, part of which was fully restored in water last year, with Trust volunteers currently progressing to water a further section next year.

With the preparation work under way, the trust is actively raising funds for the next phase to follow on.
