Do you know the origins of St George’s Day?

We all know that St George's Day is on 23rd April, but what do we know about the man himself:

  • St George became the Patron Saint of England in 1348.
  • St George’s Day was declared a national feast day and holiday in England in 1415.
  • Following the union with Scotland at the end of the 18th Century, St Georges Day is no longer a national holiday.
  • St George was born to Christian parents in A.D. 270 in Cappadocia (now Eastern Turkey)
  • Aged 17, St George became a Roman Solidier but protested against his pagan leader, Emperor Diocletian who led Rome’s Persecution of Christians.
  • St George was beheaded because he stayed true to his faith.
  • Traditional customs were to fly the St George’s flag and wear a red rose in one’s lapel
  • The hymn ‘Jerusalem’ was also sung on the 23rd April, or the nearest Sunday to that date, in churches across the nation
  • The emblem of St George is a red cross on a white background – it was adopted by Richard the Lionheart and brought to England in the 12th Century.  The Kings soldiers would wear it on their uniforms to avoid confusion during battle.
  • A story recognised by most people is the slaying of a dragon by St George, although this is likely to be fictitious.

We have found two events celebrating St George’s Day within the Lichfield area:
