Lichfield District Council, which manages Friary Grange Leisure Centre, is working with clubs and the users of its sports hall to relocate as many activities as possible, while the hall is out of action.
The work is scheduled to take place in the beginning of 2011. The sports hall will close on Monday 4 January 2011 and is expected to reopen towards the end of March 2011.
Councillor Val Richards, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure Services, said: “We’d like to thank everyone for bearing with us, and we’re sorry for the inconvenience this will cause. We have tried to relocate as many of the clubs that use the sports hall as we can. Unfortunately, the works will mean we will not be able to hire out our badminton courts or run other activities in the sports hall during this period. The rest of the leisure centre will be open as usual and should not be affected by the work.”
The work is necessary because the sports hall’s roof is coming to the end of its expected lifespan. As it contains a number of cracked glazed panels, it needs to be replaced to make sure it can withstand heavy rain or strong wind.
The repairs are being funded by Staffordshire County Council, from its sinking fund to maintain the leisure centre.
