Jubilee Proms Concert at Lichfield Cathedral
Lichfield Garrick and Lichfield Cathedral have come together for the first time to present a magnificent concert in celebration of the Accession of Queen Elizabeth II and the great tradition of the patriotic British Proms. And, Lichfield Garrick is delighted to announce that John Sergeant will be the guest presenter of the celebratory evening.
In recent years, John Sergeant has returned to his first loves of broadcasting and entertaining, appearing as a guest in a wide variety of programmes, including Have I Got News for You, Room 101 and The News Quiz on Radio 4.
John Sergeant commented: “I am delighted to present this splendid celebration of the Diamond Jubilee. It is set to be a fantastic evening, with stirring music in the stunning surroundings of Lichfield Cathedral. I think the chance to enjoy the concert, while picnicking outside in the cathedral’s grounds is also very much in keeping with how we as a nation like to celebrate our royalty and join in with the festivities.”
On the night, the programme of music will feature coronation anthems, including Zadok the Priest and I Was Glad, together with stirring marches, such as Crown Imperial and Orb & Sceptre. Images of the Westminster Abbey Coronation and HM The Queen’s visit to Lichfield Cathedral in 2011 will be set to music, and there will be live cameras relaying images of the concert throughout the cathedral. Music will be broadcast outside to all those celebrating and picnicking in the cathedral grounds. A rousing patriotic collage of traditional Last Night of the Proms favourites, Rule Britannia, Nimrod, Sea Songs, Jerusalem, I Vow to thee my Country and of course, Pomp & Circumstance March No 1 – Land of Hope and Glory will guarantee a spectacular flag waving finale.
The audience can enjoy the great tradition of the patriotic British proms concert either seated within the medieval cathedral or soak up the summer atmosphere on the West Front lawn with a picnic with friends and family.
The evening will feature the combined talents of the cathedral’s resident Darwin Ensemble Chamber Orchestra together with the City Concert Orchestra (leaders Alex Laing and Robert Atchison). This debut pairing will be led by four local conductors: husband and wife team, Ben and Cathy Lamb, Directors of Music at Lichfield Cathedral, Artistic & Executive Director of Lichfield Garrick, Adrian Jackson and cathedral organist, Martyn Rawles. The concert will also feature Soprano, Elizabeth MacDonald, the Lichfield Cathedral Choir and the Lichfield Cathedral Chamber Choir.
