Lichfield Cathedral will be holding a special service this Sunday to remember the outbreak of the First World War and the cost and sacrifice of all who fought.
The vigil of reflection will take place on Sunday 3rd August at 8.30pm, the eve of the actual centenary day.
Based on the service of ‘Tenebrae’ (usually performed in the week before Easter when candles are extinguished one by one to recall Jesus’ journey through suffering and death), the service will help you commemorate the true fear, shock, grief and tragedy of World War One and will include a short requiem written by Walford Davies in 1915, ‘In Sacred Memory of all those who have fallen in the war’, Fauré’s ‘Pie Jesu’ and Handel’s ‘I know that my Redeemer liveth.’
At the end of the service, two young people will bear the light of a hurricane lamp and lead the congregation out into the night for an emotional ending.
