On Thursday 8 December 2011, a group of 10 local government officials from Kenya joined Lichfield District Council on a visit to Florette in Fradley to see how the council regulates food safety practices at local businesses.
The visit was one of the stops on the delegates’ week-long tour of the UK to explore areas of food safety, health and safety, and licensing. Organised and funded by the International Finance Corporation, the aim of the tour is to help the Kenyan officials to reform the way they regulate businesses back home.
On the day, the group, which included officials from the city councils of Nairobi and Mombasa and two members of the International Finance Corporation, were given a tour of the salad processing plant to see how Florette maintain high food hygiene standards.
During the tour, Lichfield District Council’s food team explained how it works with businesses to make sure the right structures are in place to reduce the need for regulation.
Lichfield District Council also talked to the delegation about the role of IT and data sharing.
