Now in its third year, Lichfield Arts Song Writing Competition aims to support, encourage and develop new folk song writing talent. Prizes include cash awards of £150 for Best Overall Song, and £50 for Best Song in the under 19 category, time in a Recording studio to record the Best Overall Song, and all finalists will be invited to attend a song writing masterclass led by the internationally acclaimed John Tams
For the purposes of the competition, Lichfield Arts defines ‘folk’ in the widest sense of the genre, encompassing both traditional and contemporary styles. Songs shortlisted for the final will be performed at Lichfield Festival of Folk (L2F) on Sunday 20th October, where awards will be made for the overall winner, and a separate award for the winner in the Under-19 category.
Entry is open to anyone resident in the United Kingdom, and entrants may enter as either individuals, or as part of a team. Up to two songs can be entered, with a maximum running time of five minutes. Entry to the competition is £5.00 per song for entrants 19 years or older on 1 September 2019, and free to entrants aged 19 or under.
Songs will be judged on their compositional merit, not on their performance.
A spokesman said ‘The L2F song writing competition is a great opportunity for all creatives, it goes from strength to strength, and attracts increasingly high quality entries. Get your thinking caps on, and your vocal cords and instruments tuned. We can’t wait to hear your aural creations’.
