Lichfield District Council was pleased to officially reopen the newly repaired Birmingham Road multi storey car park on Tuesday 9 November 2011.

Makers Construction, based locally in Shenstone, spent 11 weeks making the city car park safe again. Works included repairing the car park’s concrete floor and ceiling slabs, strengthening the columns, waterproofing the top-deck, and reinforcing some of the walls.

Of the project, Cllr Stanhope, Cabinet Member for Democratic and Legal Services, commented: “It has been a pleasure to work with a local company, Makers Construction, which has proved to be highly efficient and cooperative. They understood our brief - to reopen the car park for the Christmas trading period - and put in huge effort to complete the repairs in good time.”

Before the ‘ribbon was cut’, the car park was put through rigorous safety tests. After passing with flying colours, the project’s structural engineers, Wardell Armstrong, confirmed that the multi storey was structurally sound and ready for business.

Councillor Stanhope did the honours and officially opened the car park to shoppers and visitors.

“I am delighted Birmingham Road multi storey car park is open in time for the Christmas rush. I know that visitors will once again find it a useful place to park, as it is convenient for the Three Spires Shopping Centre, city centre, Lichfield Garrick and beyond,” said Cllr Stanhope.

To give the car park a new lease of life, the works included painting the internal walls white, creating wider parking bays and installing new pay and display machines.

Lichfield Shopmobility, the scheme that offers people with mobility problems a place to park and then the free use of an electric-powered mobility scooter or wheelchair, has also moved back to the multi storey car park.
