A mixture of classic and recent films will be shown monthly in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere aimed at people living with Dementia and their families.
Following a successful pilot scheme of four initial screenings thanks to funding from Film Hub Midlands, many local people living with Dementia have enjoyed screenings of films such as Calamity Jane and Downton Abbey. Now thanks to further funding from the McLay Dementia Trust, this can continue for the foreseeable future.
Singing, music and entertainment is proven to improve the lives of people with Dementia, and positive engagement can dramatically improve their quality of life. We have already seen this first-hand with our first two Dementia Friendly screenings and have had positive feedback from audience members. The Garrick began showing the latest blockbusters and event cinema screenings in its Studio theatre in September 2019 and included Dementia Friendly films from the offset.
Matt Clay, Development Manager at Lichfield Garrick Theatre said:
“We are thrilled that Lichfield Garrick can continue to offer our monthly Dementia Friendly film screenings. Activities like this in a supportive atmosphere are very important in helping people live well with Dementia.
Thanks to the McLay Dementia Trust, we can keep running these events whilst developing them to make them sustainable and a permanent part of our programme.”
The screenings have already been well supported in the pilot phase, with many local people and care homes attending multiple films.
A resident of The Spires Care Home in Lichfield said:
“I thoroughly enjoyed the Dementia Friendly film at The Garrick, everyone there was so friendly and they looked after us wonderfully. The screen is the perfect size & we were comfortable. I have already booked a ticket for the next film event.”
Amy Doyle, General Manager at The Spires said
“The team at The Garrick theatre have been so supportive and thoughtful with how they are running the Dementia Friendly Screenings, they are such a marvellous idea. Our residents and some families who have been had a brilliant time. They are very much looking forward to returning monthly for the great movies, good company and ice cream, what could be a better outing!”
Everyone is welcome at the screenings and the atmosphere is supportive of those living with Dementia. The sound is reduced in the cinema and the lights are kept on at a low level, we have extra staff on duty to help customers around the building, and there will always be an interval.
