As part of the weekend, tourist attractions across the city will throw open their doors for free, and a range of Olympic-inspired activities will take place on Lichfield’s Market Square and beyond.
Highlights of the two-day event will include a family Olympic torch hunt, hobby horse racing, dressing up in togas, bow and arrow making, as well as performances by the Lichfield Mysteries & Aspire Drama Group.
The Heritage Weekend Working Group, which includes Lichfield District Council and many tourism providers across the city, is celebrating the news that Ye Olde Games has been granted the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme.
The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Seb Coe, Chair, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, said: “We want to use the power of the Games to inspire change. The Inspire programme is recognising the work our partners are doing all round the UK to help us achieve this vision. Councillor Louise Flowith, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: “We were thrilled to be awarded the Inspire mark. It is a coveted badge of the 2012 Games, and it is great that Lichfield’s Heritage Weekend has been recognised in this way. Excitement is mounting as the September event draws nearer, and we hope lots of people will put the date in their diary and join us for Ye Olde Games.
