North Lichfield was lit up on Friday 29 October, when local people, clubs and agencies paraded more than 100 handcrafted lanterns through the streets of north Lichfield.
Lanterns of all shapes and sizes, including two Daleks, a dragon, a fire engine and smoke alarm, a house, two pumpkins and a giant rocket, lit up the night sky and were admired by the crowds, who came out to cheer on the procession as it passed by.
The imaginative lanterns were made at a series of free workshops that took place the week before, throughout the autumn half term.
Colin Cruise, volunteer and North Lichfield Initiative board member, said: “The lantern procession is the local event of the year, and I was so proud to see everyone out in force, parading their amazing lanterns. It is a special feeling to be surrounded by your family and friends, and to share in something that you’ve all helped to create.”
After the procession lots of people gathered at Curborough Community Centre to enjoy tea and cakes, and to discuss which of the lanterns were the most spectacular.
Councillor Helen Fisher, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “Although it was a bit windy on the night, the lantern procession was stunning. It once again shows what can be done when everyone comes together.”
Ian Parry, Staffordshire County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, added: “This is a fantastic project, bringing families, friends and neighbours together. It is a huge celebration of community life, and I am delighted this year’s parade was a great success.”
The lantern procession has been made possible by the kind support of >> North Lichfield Community and Learning Partnership, North Lichfield Initiative, Lichfield District Council, Staffordshire County Council, Midland Heart, Adult and Community Learning, Lichfield & District CVS, Lichfield City Council, Curborough Community Centre Service, St John Ambulance, Staffordshire Young People’s Service, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue, Age Uk South Staffordshire, Lichfield District Community Safety Partnership, Staffordshire Police, HomeZone Living, Lichfield Adventure Playcare Association (LAPA), Willows Primary School, and lots of community volunteers.
