Lichfield’s Big Jubilee Lunch Round Up

Were you there?

More than 1,500 people celebrated The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style at Lichfield Cathedral

In celebration of The Queen’s 60 years on the throne, Lichfield District Council, Lichfield Cathedral, Lichfield Arts and The Lichfield Festival came together to host a Big Jubilee Lunch at Lichfield Cathedral on Sunday 3 June 2012.

Despite the rain, organisers estimate that more than 1,500 people of all ages descended on the cathedral to enjoy their picnics, the music and entertainment.

The ‘Al Fresco Acoustic Afternoon’ of music featured performances by local bands and musicians, including: The Offbeat, Dean James, Robert Jackson and Chris Elliot.

Children had their faces painted, were given balloon models, decorated crown-shaped biscuits and paper crowns, and had the chance to enter a ‘dress like a royal’ competition. There was also an entertainer on stilts marching around dressed as a Grenadier Guard!

Lichfield’s Town Crier, Ken Knowles, brought the event to a close when he invited everyone to join him in saying ‘God save The Queen’ followed by a rousing rendition of the national anthem.

Councillor Louise Flowith, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: “In spite of the rain, the cathedral was packed with people who had come together to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as a community. Lots of people commented on how special it was to be able to sit in the spectacular cathedral and enjoy the atmosphere, music and entertainment. Thank you to all the organisers, musicians and entertainers for making it such a memorable event.”

While still in the Jubilee spirit, Lichfield Garrick and Lichfield Cathedral are proud to present A Jubilee Proms Concert in Lichfield Cathedral on Saturday 16 June 2012.

The audience can enjoy the great tradition of the patriotic British proms concert either seated within the medieval cathedral or soak up the summer atmosphere on the West Front lawn with a picnic.

On the night, the programme of music will feature coronation anthems, including Zadok the Priest and I Was Glad, together with stirring marches, such as Crown Imperial and Orb & Sceptre.

Screens inside the cathedral will broadcast the concert with footage of The Queen’s coronation, while music will be broadcast outside to everyone picnicking in the cathedral grounds.
