Tickets are now on sale for this year's lichfield literature festival. Brochures will be landing on doormats in the next week or so, but in the meantime the full programme is available to browse and book online.

Colin Dexter, creator of the Inspector Morse detective series and an avid crossword puzzler, will be the guest speaker at this year's Lichfield Literary Dinner, to be held in The George Hotel on Friday 7 October.

Colin Dexter

Dexter has written 13 Morse novels in total and in 1997 he was presented with the Crime Writers Association Cartier Diamond Dagger Award for outstanding services to crime literature. His 13th and final Inspector Morse novel, The Remorseful Day, was published in 1999

Crime also features in this year's Big Read. 200 free copies of Val McDermid's Trick Of The Dark will be distributed throughout Lichfield. From mid-September, pick one up from a coffee bar in town, from Lichfield Library, or from the Lichfield Festival office, read it, and then come and discuss it with the author at a special event after lichfield literature.

Val McDermid is one of our best selling and most acclaimed crime writers. She is the creator of The Wire In The Blood, which inspired the TV series of the same name. She will be coming to the Friary School Theatre on Thursday 13 October to talk about her latest book, The Retribution, and her other works, including Trick Of The Dark.

The Literary Dinner and the Big Read are the centerpieces of this regular autumn festival of books, which this year is bigger than ever with 37 authors appearing between Saturday 1 October and Sunday 9 October.

This year's lichfield literature has expanded to include a wider range of authors and subjects. Among the other highlights are:

Novelist Salley Vickers talking about her latest book, Aphrodite's Hat.

Satirist Craig Brown presenting a whole literary festival in one event, with help from the actress Eleanor Bron.

Cycling enthusiast Robert Penn talking about travelling the world to build his perfect bike.

Jane Robinson on how the Women's Institute is "a force to be reckoned with".

Rabbi Julia Neuberger considering what makes life worthwhile.

Fiona MacCarthy talking about Edward Burne-Jones, "the last Pre-Raphaelite".

Adam Hart-Davis revealing the secrets of Time.

The first annual Samuel Johnson Talk, which will be given by Henry Hitchings, whose latest book is The Language Wars.

Former Cabinet Minister Douglas Hurd talking about his new book on diplomacy.

BBC Radio 4 Thought For The Day favourite Rabbi Lionel Blue explaining The Godseeker's Guide.

lichfield literature events are held in association with The George Hotel, and most of them are held in the elegant Garrick Room at the hotel. 37 authors will be taking part in readings, discussions and workshops across a range of themes from biography and history to exploration and science. Family and education events will also feature in the wide programme.
