To celebrate its energy initiative, Warmer Homes, Greener District, Lichfield District Council invited primary school children from across the district to enter a ‘design a bookmark competition’ around the theme of saving energy.

More than 250 children took part, entering their creative designs into the two age categories – 4 to 7 and 7 to 11.

After much deliberation, the judges chose the two winners. Then on Friday 10 December, Barney Harwood, who is staring in Peter Pan at the Lichfield Garrick, presented both the winners with a framed copy of their winning bookmark.

Six-year-old Libby May Randall, who goes to Croft Primary School in Armitage, won the 4 to 7 age group with her colourful bookmark, which features litter-picking and turning off the lights.

Nine-year-old Isabel Mayes, from St Mary’s Primary School in Colton, won the 7 to 11 age group with her ‘save energy’ theme and the catchy slogan, ‘show that you are bright by turning out the light’.

On top of their presentation bookmarks, the girls have won both their schools solar-power kits to use in the classroom.

The winning designs have been turned into bookmarks, which the district council will be sending to all the schools that entered the competition. They will also be available in libraries across the district and from the District Council House reception.

Councillor Ian Pritchard, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Health and Environmental Protection, said: “We hope these bookmarks will encourage more people to think about making their homes more energy efficient, and to find out how they could benefit from the Warmer Homes, Greener District scheme.

“All the bookmarks were brilliant, so choosing the two best entries was a hard task. However, we were very impressed with the winning designs, which are eye-catching and show a clear understanding of the topic. Thank you to all schools who took part and well done to Libby May and Isabel.”

The Warmer Homes, Greener District scheme offers Lichfield District homeowners a 50% discount off cavity wall and loft insulation, or the whole amount for free to eligible homeowners.
