Myth: Pour White Wine On Red Wine Spill
Answer: Not effective – plus, less wine to drink! Most people swear by this one. They say that by pouring white wine is the best way to remove red wine stains. This is not effective. Because all you have managed to do is possibly lightening the stain and made it bigger, plus you have already wasted a glass of red so why waste half a bottle of white! You will get much better results from hiring an experienced professional – we often treat red wine stains on carpets and upholstery with excellent results.
Myth: Rub The Stain To Remove It
Answer: Fatal mistake, rubbing at a stain will only increase the problem. Rubbing could cause irreparable damage especially to a carpet. You run the risk of opening up the fibres and driving the stain deeper, you can also cause fibre burst which makes the stained area different to the rest of the carpet fibre and even if you are lucky enough to remove the stain the distortion of the fibres will look worse and can’t be repaired.
Myth: Use Washing Up Liquid, Dishwasher Liquid, Washing Powder
Answer: Please don’t – these products are a detergent. Using it as a spot cleaner will leave behind a sticky residue. As a result, your furnishings will get dirtier quicker. This is because detergents are designed to be washed away with a substantial amount of water – too much water to use on carpets or upholstery if you don’t want to risk dampness damaging your furnishings! Also washing up liquid contains a colouring, we have seen furnishings damaged as a result of using red coloured washing up liquid.
Myth: Off The Shelf Items Remove All Types Of Stains 100%
Answer: No, they wont. They can make the problem far worse. If you ask any professional carpet and upholstery cleaner what their worst nightmare is it will almost certainly be “the client used a product they bought from the supermarket”.
The image we’ve included with this blog shows this. The client used a branded cleaning product and it caused the black marks. How is this possible you say? Well the cleaning product was foam based and not suitable for the fabric the furniture was made of.
Myth: Professional Spot And Stain Removal Is Expensive
Answer: Home remedies may seem like a low-cost solution for stain removal, but contacting a professional is the smart choice. Home remedies or ill-informed DIY can damage your carpet and upholstery, leading to a costly replacement which exceeds the amount charged for a stain removal.
Is There A Cleaning Product You Can Use Safely At Home?
Answer: Yes, a number of professional carpet and upholstery cleaners have a general spotter that is effective on a number of stains. We have our own brand spot and stain remover that we give to some of our clients post cleaning. They are safe to use on most furnishings. But we always say they are best used with our Neutralising Solution for the best results.
