Vietnam Trekkers join the Darwin Walk
23rd July 2013

The St Giles “It’s a Knockout” competition at the rugby club, noted in our last blog, was disappointing, attendance was well down on what the Hospice anticipated, probably due to too much going on in Lichfield that weekend.  At least the sun shone, we were glad we had borrowed a gazebo to shelter under.  Nevertheless, with the addition of a car boot sale on the following Sunday (no gazebo this time) we added just over £108 to our trekking fund.

Last weekend we joined in the Darwin Walk as part of our training along with another fellow trekker, Chris Cheadle.  The walk is a 10 mile perambulation around the boundaries of the city, established in 1986 in honour of Erasmus Darwin, whose statue now stands in Darwin Park.  Fortunately the heat wave relented for the day and gave us a cloudy sky, even a little light drizzle, good walking conditions.  This was the first time we had done the walk, having lived in Lichfield for nearly 38 years it is amazing how much we didn’t know or hadn’t seen.

The walk is at a steady pace over a variety of public footpaths, field edges and some roads with the option to drop out part way round and is relatively flat, ideal for families.   The stop at Mabel’s Team Rooms at Curborough was especially welcome.  We were treated to Darwin Cake – really delicious!  Have a look at the website, www.darwinwalk.org.uk or pick up a route guide at the tourist information office if you fancy doing the next one on 6th October, we would recommend it!
