There is so much to see in Lichfield that a few days are needed to visit everything. Samuel Johnson was a literary lion and his story, from rags to riches, is described in his birthplace museum. A short video acts as an introduction and then the visitor has free rein to explore the house, with fully documented material to add to the experience in each room. Entry is free but, of course, all donations are welcomed.

Being from Edinburgh and having visited Lichfield over a number of years, I have always wanted to visit Dr Johnston's house. It filled in a lot of blank places on my knowledge the man himself, and I learnt more about the Edinburgh man, James Boswell here than I ever have in my study of history over 6-7 years in Edinburgh. Very well presented historical attraction, with a very large supply of original artifacts on display, Worthy totally of English Heritage accreditation, but a charitable trust run institution, very commendable, and recommended for a visit.

We took some of our friends who had come from Germany here. It was an enjoyable part of our visit to Lichfield. Just adds to the charm of the town. Lot of little activates dotted around the place for children.

Four floors of a small historic building. No lifts. This is a pleasant welcoming place to visit. Features period artefacts and research facilities.

This is just a lovely place to visit to get an impression of what it must have been like to live in this house when Samuel Johnson did. It is also an excellent place to learn about this amazing man who wrote the first comprehensive English dictionary. The fact that it is still a book shop adds to the enchantment.

This small museum explains the life of Samuel Jonson, a man who in his life saw a great deal of chance in 18th century England, and left a legacy of letters, essays and books (not least of which was a dictionary) that gives us great insight into life at that time.

Various rooms in this house of his birth are dedicated to different periods of his life, and culminate on the top floor with the opportunity to dress up! This museum offers information at different levels, so a visit can be made with the whole family. The one caveat is that the house, being in tact from Johnson's day, has steep stairs which are not accessible for anyone with mobility issues.

Definitely worth a visit.
