A group of eleven of us went to Samuel Johnson Birthplace museum . We had pre- booked a guided tour. Our guided tour was led by Sarah who was both knowledgeable and also informative. She is a good speaker and guide as she made sure that we were entertained as well as informed with a nice balance of information and anecdotes. They knew we had an interest in gardening and allowed us a close look at Millers gardening dictionary of 1752. All the volunteers were friendly and helpful. We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

What a great find this museum was. Very informative and fantastic being able to flick through a copy of the dictionary. Also a must see if you are a blackadder fan. There is no sausage or aardvark.

When you walk into the Museum it appears to be rather small, however, there are several levels to the house so there's quite a bit to look at. I particularly enjoyed the video that was played in one of the rooms and the costumes on the top floor which you could dress up in. Admittedly the main draw of the Museum at first was that it was free but me and my partner spent a good 45 minutes in the house looking at all the displays. Worth a look if you're looking for something to do, maybe as a time filler.

Such an interesting museum on several floors. The building is deceptive from the outside as it doesn't give you the impression of being such a mine of interesting exhibits. Love the fact that someone so well known as Samuel Johnson was born in our city! People think he only even lived in London - I've recommended people from London come up to the Museum and see his birthplace.

How many places of this stature are free entry? Very few and I'm still surprised that this is. I was given a lovely welcome as I entered the building. At the suggestion of the lady on the desk, I began by watching the film about Johnson's life which was very interesting and put the house in context. All of the displays are well labelled and I enjoyed the quotes posted liberally around. Well worth visiting.

A little disappointed with my visit. There seemed to be as much information about his best friend, Garrick, as there was about Johnson, however, there was some interesting details about Samuel Johnson so as the entry was free, well worth a visit.Visited on

Very interesting museum, with original rooms allowing a look into the past and plenty of informative but not overwhelming historical information.
