Small museum (and don't miss it, it's hidden behind scaffolding as there is work going on). Very interesting video explaining all the background, before you visit the various rooms. Friendly welcome too - they are delighted to have visitors. For anyone interested in history and language, it's a must-see. The one downside is, it wouldn't be very accessible for anyone with mobility issues.

After a very welcoming greeting at the entrance the birthplace collection starts with an excellent short video about the life and work of Samuel Johnson. There are some useful boards explaining the part of 18C Johnson lived in and the exhibition continues over three floors . Free entryVisited on

Never knew this was here but it’s well worth a visit.

Warm welcome when we arrived by a friendly lady who gave us a leaflet showing us what was in all the rooms. Lots of exhibits to see and interactive stuff for kids. We loved the stack porcupine game and the skittles.

Really enjoyed our visit and it’s in a great location near all the shops and food places.

Really authentic experience in this period house that envelops you in Georgian times. 5 storeys of interesting artefacts including an original dictionary and a fifteen minute film clip combine with art work and events of the time to immerse you in the world of Samuel Johnson. Will definitely return with my granddaughters to take in more detail especially when his father's bookbinding shop becomes interactive.

Free, but please leave a donation. A good bookshop and a remarkable fact and antique packed museum to a great man.

Staggering how many local people have bypassed this gem including me for many years. Centrally located and friendly welcome. It's a lovely building with nearly all of it's original features in place. Plenty to see and read.

The Samuel Johnson museum in Lichfield is an essential visit for a new visitor to the city. For Lichfield residents, you should visit from time to time to remind you about the lustre he brought to our lovely cathedral city.

Fascinating museum about the life, works and times of Samuel Johnson. Free entry. His life is told in order as you ascend the building, do go to the attic as there is a first edition of his dictionary to admire and a copy to interrogate. Also fascinating to see what else was happening in the world. Helpful staff.
