This place is well worth a visit & is in honour of the man who wrote the first dictionary. Very educational with fun stuff for the kids to find on the way round. The staff were first class (even pointing out a possible TARDIS in one of the paintings. Ask them for more details !!! ) and I really liked this place. Would go again and recommend anyone in Lichfield to go too.

I didn't know anything about Samuel Johnson before I went to the museum, but an hour and a half later I was an expert! My friend and I were welcomed into the museum by an enthusiastic member of staff who was knowledgeable about Samuel and passionate about sharing her interest of him, but not at all pushy. We were delighted and surprised that the museum is free as there is a lot to see and do in the small space available. I was pleased to see activities available for children too.

Centre of Lichfield city,all you need to know about Dr.Johnson.There are two flights of stairs to the various parts of the house,No access for wheel chairs,and not recommended for anyone with walking difficulties.

Set on 4 floors, this is a very interesting house. There is a video showing his life and times, which is informative. There is also the First Edition of his famous dictionary (vol i and ii) in a glass case, and a facsimile of the same by the side for you to look at.
When we got home we had to watch Blackadder III, episode 2. LOL.

A very interesting small house and museum. The lady on reception was very knowledgable and friendly. There are many artefacts from Samuel Johnson's lifetime. The most fascinating is one of his original dictionaries in pride of place on the top floor. Recommended.

An elegant 5-storey Georgian house in the middle of Lichfield, this munsuem will tell you a multitude of things about Johnson, his life and friends. There is a facsimile of his dictionary for you to browse through. And on the walls his famous quotes and witticisms. A little film, narrated from the viewpoint of one of his friends, tells of his life and work, useful particularly for people who can't climb all those stairs to the top floor. And it's open 7 days a week, we were told, and entry free is of charge.

We live about 12 miles from this wonderful museum .All three grandchildren have been many times and always spot something they hadn’t seen before . You need to be a bit active to climb the staircases to the various floors with it being a 5 storey building . The staff welcome you as you enter the front door and there is a quiz sheet for the children encouraging them to find a cat on each floor and writing down it’s name. They get a sticker at the end and sometimes a chocolate ...this isn’t a big prize house it’s a fun visit to learn about the 18 th century . One room has clothes for children to dress up in . Sometimes one of the rooms has craft activities . It’s a good place to visit on wet days when Beacon Park is not suitable . Toilets are available next door and the museum is free .

On a visit to Lichfield Cathedral we stumbled across this wonderful small Museum. Situated in the centre of the town this Georgian house, birthplace of Samuel Johnson provided a charming and informative addition to our day.
The staff were really knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend this free attraction.

Free access, multi floor building, once home to the author of the dictionary. Scenes recreate what living was like in the house at the time of Johnson. DVD narrates history. Many books available to browse and kids can dress up on the top floor. Excerts from the dictionary and Johnson's quotes adorn the wall. Staff are friendly and helpful. It's very easy to be lost in educational thought in this fine place, whilst meeting Johnson and his friends; zero pence, well spent.
