So much to ascertain about the history of Lichfield and Samuel Johnson. He went to such lengths to ensure he became famous. I do not believe Blackadder appreciated him however.

Organised as most birthplace museums of celebrities, informative and interactive. The lady at the reception is really nice and enthusiastic.

I had already been delighted by the discovery of the Lichfield Heritage Centre and was not prepared to be amazed again when on the corner opposite the Heritage Centre is the birthplace of Samuel Johnson. I climbed the entrance stairs and opened the door and was met by the lovely sight of a bookshop and wooden floors much as it would have been in Georgian times. Fanciful as it seems it felt that the shop/home enveloped me. I enjoyed exploring this treasure and met another visitor and he was an enamoured of the building as I was. All to soon I had to leave for an appointment. Entrance is free but I willingly put money into a 'book' for donations

Lichfield is a wonderful city with a lot to see spread over a relatively small area. The Samuel Johnson Museum on the corner of Market Street is surrounded by shops and is a short distance from the Cathedral (which is also a definite must-see). This fairly small museum (but interesting and insightful and spread across five floors) is where Dr Johnson (of the English Dictionary fame) was born is well is worth a visit.

Whilst visiting Lichfield recently I went round the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum. It was very interesting. Unfortunately it is not suitable for invalids who cannot climb stairs, as it is on 3 levels. If you are a literary buff I would recommend a visit to this museum.

Entrance is free, and the house itself is very quaint and full of interest. There is a short film to watch, which gives the basic facts about Dr Johnson's life. It isn't very profound or subtle, but it is throughly worthwhile in that it gives an idea of a great man, of whom Lichfield is justly proud, and presents it in a way accessible to visitors who might never have heard of Johnson. It deserves to be supported.

What a wonderfully gifted and intelligent man Samuel Johnson was, a great Englishman whose wit and wisdom this lovely museum helps to pass on to future generations. I especially like the quotes posted above the staircase, so many of Johnson's acutely sharp observations still hold true today. And it's free to get in! To visit Lichfield and not come here would be a crime.

Gives a picture of how people lived in his times, and how he spent time with his circle of friends. Curator was very helpful.
