An interesting, characterful old house slap bang in the city centre, well served by its charming, enthusiastic and informative curator on our visit. It is worth visiting for itself, just to get a flavour of pretty much how properties of this type were laid out and inhabited in the 18th century (imagine- no toilet!). But on top of that it was the birthplace of a great man of letters of whom we can be proud, and whose life is explained very well with many contemporay exhibits and an informative video. Many old books on sale too. Amazingly it is free (although donations for upkeep etc are welcomed) and open 7 days a week. A real credit to the city.

Great place with great staff. Attractions include a good video about Johnson's life, both here and in London. Go for it!

I must admit I didn't know really anything at all about Samuel Johnson before except his name and that he was an 18th century figure. But the house was very impressive and I was impressed by the number of floors with each offering something different. I learnt quite a bit about the place and Johnson while the curator was extremely helpful, enthusiastic and knowledgeable and even advised me on other events in the city that were on that day to make my stay more worthwhile.

Continuing our trip to Lichfield, after the morning across the road at the heritage centre our group squeezed into the bookshop, which is the entrance to the museum. We were greeted by our extremely knowledgeable and very articulate guide. He was just the right mix of teacher and actor, an absolute mine of information. The property is quite big for a town house although the numerous rooms are quite small. However it is still in it's original state and houses many paintings of Johnsons family and contemporaries.

this is a place we took the grandchildren to and they enjoyed the painting activity that was being done for them also finding the objects they had to find on a sheet of paper and at the end they got a sticker for finding them all we only paid for the painting activity which was just a few pounds every thing else is free

My family and I have visited the town many times and only today did we notice this building and thought we'd go in and have a look. I wasn't familiar with Samuel Johnson but this place soon enlightened me.
We enjoyed all the floors including the basement.
The man at the entrance was very friendly. :)
