Footballing legends Sir Bobby Charlton and Kenny Dalglish today launched a project that could see some of the world's biggest container ships visiting the Mersey, writes Barry Turnbull.
It's a big turnaround for the two cities have been at war over shipping, football, music and everything else for over 100 years. But it is envisaged that the £300m plan to create a 'Superport' will bring trade to both cities.
Today was the start of dredging operations to dig a 16.5 metre trench in the riverbed to enable massive cargo ships to berth in the port. Currently the biggest ships carry around 3,000 containers but when work is complete the supergiants carrying 13,500 boxes will be able to anchor in Liverpool. It is likely that trade with North America will be the big boost. The European Investment Bank has contributed £150m and central government £35m to the Peel Ports project.
