The EU have agreed to inject £2.15m into tourism and leisure in Merseyside. Events like the Liverpool International Music Festival will receive extra funding for promotions. Other events across the region such the 2014 British Open Golf Championship to be held in Hoylake, and St. Helen's First World War Centenary Commemorations, will also gain.
It is esttimated that an additional 1.68 million visitors are expected to visit the Liverpool City Region by 2015, with approximately 50% staying at least overnight, giving a massive boost to the hospitality and catering sectors. Estamtes of the revenue to the area exceed £200 million.
The EU granted the money after an application was made on behalf of Merseyside's tourism industry by the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), a coalition of councils and business leaders.
