MAKE THEM WEAR LIFE JACKETS ON DUCK BUS?

Liverpool’s four Yellow Duckmarine vehicles have been grounded and the company placed in administration following two recent sinkings. When I took a trip with my children there was no safety message and no necessity to wear a life jacket. Perhaps there should be. Two people were killed when one of these World War ll amphibious vehicles sank in the River Delaware, Philadelphia in 2010. Going further back, 13 passengers died in a more serious incident in Canada.

Now the London Duck Tours have announced a comprehensive safety review of its entire fleet.

These are ancient vehicles, some saw service on D-Day, and many appear to be ‘clapped out’.

In Liverpool two drivers say they were sacked for raising safety issues. The matter was settled prior to an industrial tribunal taking place.

On the journey I took, the DUKW actually conked out and although it was on dry land I did wonder what would happen if it occurred while the vehicle was afloat.

Various investigations will now take place and no doubt the owners Pearwild Ltd will hope to say some or part of the business.

On their website under Frequently Asked Questions is the following:

Q Do I need to wear a lifejacket?

A Not unless you want to. Our vehicles are equipped with enough life jackets for all passengers if deemed necessary..
