Hinckley & Rugby’s Alex to walk on glass

This Saturday [June 9] Hinckley & Rugby Building Society’s premises manager Alex Knapper is to do a sponsored walk with a difference – over broken glass.

It’s thanks to Hinckley & Rugby that the walk is taking place at all – the Society stepped in with £250 sponsorship to enable the event to go ahead after a backer pulled out of the Lutterworth Royal British Legion Fun Day.

The Fun Day is raising money for the Legion and for the community initiative Radio Lutterworth, whose director Bill Piper is also to walk on glass and complete a firewalk. Bill said: “Hinckley & Rugby stepped in at the 11th hour and, if you like, pulled it out of the ashes after we had been let down.”

Alex, who has already walked over hot coals, has a special reason for wanting to take on the glass walking challenge, in memory of his colleague Jeanette Lewis, who died in April after a long and brave battle against cancer. Alex is raising sponsorship for Leicestershire hospice LOROS from his efforts.

Usually to be found keeping the Society’s offices and branches in good working order, Alex is now looking forward to a battle of mind over matter when he faces the broken glass at the Lutterworth Fun Day on June 9.

The event at Dunley Way in Lutterworth runs from 11am to 5pm and is being hosted by Radio Lutterworth and the women’s section of the town branch of the Royal British Legion.
