Police alert public to the risks of open windows on warm nights

With temperatures reaching a soaring 29C (84.2F) degrees across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland last week, police are reminding people to secure their windows particularly at night. The temptation to leave bedroom and bathroom windows wide open is rendering householders vulnerable to thieves.

DCI Rich Ward, lead for the Operation Dynamo anti-burglary campaign at Leicestershire Police, said: “When patrolling the streets at night, officers are noticing that residents are leaving their windows wide open to let in the cool air at night.”

“Whilst it seems a logical thing to do, the reality is that leaving windows open leaves your house insecure.”

Police have stated that thieves prefer to gain entry easily, commit their crimes quickly and then exit in a short amount of time; and that they are more likely to choose a home with an open window or door.

DCI Rich Ward added: “An open window or door whatever time of day is an invite to an opportunist thief.

There are many options open to householders wanting to keep rooms cool at night, many of these are inexpensive and can be bought from any home depot, home furnishing or DIY store.

DCI Rich Ward concluded: “Don’t make it easy for thieves and remember to contact the police immediately if you witness suspicious activity, as an early call to the police can prevent a crime from taking place or lead to the arrest of a suspect.”
