Erwin Barber, service manager at Peugeot dealership, JJ Cookson Limited, will bid a fond farewell to the business today as he retires after 50 years’ service for the company. 

The 65 year old who started work with the dealership in Macclesfield as an apprentice when he was just 15 years old, estimates that he worked on over 30,000 cars and sold more than 1,000 vehicles during his five decades at the company.

During his career, Erwin developed a fan base among JJ Cookson’s loyal customers, who knew him best for his memorable habit of ballroom dancing around the showroom. 

Speaking about his long service with the dealership, Erwin said: “The past 50 years working at JJ Cookson have been fantastic. The time has gone by all too quickly. I am one of those lucky people who genuinely loves coming into work; everyday has been different and I have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people during my time here.

“Obviously things have changed quite a lot since I started with Peugeot, in terms of processes and technology, but the one thing I always enjoyed the most was dealing with the public. That part of the job hasn’t changed at all and is the same today as it was 50 years ago. 

“Although I am excited about what this new chapter in my life will bring, I will miss the team and customers very much. I have built some fantastic relationships with my clients and colleagues and I would like to thank them all for their loyalty and kindness over the years. “

James Cookson, dealer principle at JJ Cookson Ltd, added: “Erwin is a fantastic example of a dedicated, passionate member of staff and we have been lucky to have him at the dealership for so many years. We would like to thank Erwin for his loyalty and wish him all the best for his retirement.”

In January, Erwin was awarded the Service Manager’s High Achiever Award by Peugeot, in recognition of his commitment to his job and the role he has played in the success of the dealership. As a thank you, Erwin and his wife will be jetting off to Garmisch Partenkirchen in Bavaria on an Alpine Adventure, all courtesy of Peugeot.
