The bonfire will form part of a chain of 2,012 beacon fires throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, the Commonwealth and other countries. The Worcestershire Beacon bonfire will be lit at 10:15 pm and visitors are encouraged to arrive early from approximately 9:00 pm onwards.
The Chairman of the Malvern Hills Conservators, Mr Brian Pilcher said ‘This will be an occasion definitely not to be missed. From the Beacon top hundreds of beacons will be visible from horizon to horizon, and ours, one of the largest ever built on this beacon will dominate the scene.’
The Acting Director of the Conservators, Mr Rob Havard said ‘Our field staff are now dab hands at building beacons and are up for the challenge of making Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee Beacon one to remember.’
The Beacon will be lit by Mr Anthony Cotgreave who also lit the Queen’s Coronation Beacon in 1953 as a boy scout.
The event will be covered by television from ITV and BBC and also by local and national radio and press. At the millennium bonfire over 2000 people attended, and the Conservators are expecting at least as many visitors so would politely request that people make provision to take their rubbish home.
