I went to Marshall Land Rover on Leicester Road, Melton Mowbray this week and got to read some interesting material whilst in their comfortable waiting area. Land Rover it seems won not one, but two Best Car Awards this year in the What Car 2008 awards.
The first award was in the Compact 4x4 category, where the Land Rover Freelander 2.2 TD4 GS won its class. The judges said that its 'off-road ability that makes most 4x4s look weedy!' It was praised for its practicality, image, refinement and sensible running costs. The What Car Team put the Freelander is top of the pile, saying, 'Classy materials and sturdy fittings mean that it feels every inch the baby Range Rover inside. Automatic lights and wipers, climate control, cruise control, rear parking sensors and electrically folding door mirrors all come as standard. As well as doing the traditional Land Rover stuff brilliantly, it outdoes its less-rugged rivals in almost every other area. In other words, it is an outstanding driving experience.'

The second category that Land Rover won was that of the Large 4x4, with the Land Rover Discovery 2.7 TDV6 SE auto. The judges said that it is a fantastic family car. They were impressed with its ability to seat seven adults and even to transport a wardrobe - mine you, not at the same time unless you use the roof rack or a trailer! Its storage spaces were also praised. Overall the judges said, 'The Discovery is built to withstand family life. The high-quality plastics feel robust and classy, while the wipe-clean surfaces take the sting out of transporting mucky kids and pets. It's the best large 4x4 you can buy.'
