Throughout May, thebestof ran awards across the country to find the best new businesses for each town and city. As you would expect there were hundreds of businesses nominated across the country and thousands of local people voted. In the Melton Mowbray area, six new businesses from thebestof Melton Mowbray took part in the competition.
The winner was On The Sands Cafe and Deli at Long Clawson, owned by Rachel Dorsett. On The Sands is a business that focuses on quality, not only of its products, but also on the quality of service to its customers. The would say that they prepare the finest lunches, snacks and sandwiches, the most desirable hampers and tempting cheese boards. They stock the most delicious selection of meats, pates, breads and olives and the most sumptuous chocolates, cakes and fresh coffees. Their customers obviously really appreciate not only the quality food, but also the quality service. John from Melton Mowbray wrote, 'Excellent food & service. Deli is full of home made & local produce. The staff are friendly & helpful.' I spoke to a customer recently who was delighted that the cafe was so well organised and helpful when he took his young grand-daughter in recently. Nothing was to much trouble for the staff and the group of them said that they had a smashing lunch.

With this award under their belt, On The Sands have also entered other awards, including the Guild of Fine Foods Annual Speciality Food Awards and they have submitted their Steak and Long Clawson Stilton Pie, their cherry tomato and basil quiche, their oaty flapjack and their mud pie as entries into the fresh food section. In July, they should hear the results. They have also entered the East Midlands Enjoy England Excellence Awards 2008 in the category of Taste of England - this is aimed at businesses who are delivering outstanding visitor experiences, the results are expected in September.
