Traditional goldsmithing was well and truly keep alive last Wednesday when bespoke jewellery specialists, The Goldsmithy celebrated the opening of their new workshop in Cranfield. 

The father and son goldsmiths, who are specialists in handcrafted bespoke jewellery were joined by past customers, local residents and Mayor Cllr Sam Crooks to officially open the workshop, over two days of events. All who attended were given a glimpse into the traditional art with live jewellery demonstrations, a tour of the new workshop, and toasted to future successes with a glass of bubbly. 

Owner, Glenn Chapman has been in the jewellery industry since 1972, learning his trade at Cartier London where he was the last trained small worker apprentice at Wright & Davis Ltd (Cartier London) creating luxury goods. Son, Paul Chapman is learning his father’s expertise in traditional Goldsmithing. 

The Mayor, Cllr Sam Crooks said: “It’s wonderful to see this family run business keeping this traditional craft alive and I wish them every success moving forward in their new workshop.” 

Owner and founder of The Goldsmithy, Glenn Chapman comments: ‘Paul and I were delighted to welcome a whole host of people to the new workshop over the 2 days. It was wonderful to see all our hard work come together and have a collection of our pieces all in one room, with previous customers wearing their jewellery at the events.” 

Glenn continues: “A big misconception is bespoke jewellery will cost more than a high street jeweller, but this isn’t the case! If you have a budget in mind, we can work to this and create a beautiful, unique piece. We are also passionate about the recycling of old jewellery and can melt down metal you bring in to use in your new jewellery piece. This not only helps keeps the cost down, but means you hold onto the sentimental value that an off-the-shelf product doesn’t have.” 

Since opening in 2008 The Goldsmithy have handcrafted over 600 bespoke commissions including; pendants, earrings, bracelets, rings, pens, custom watch cases, and cufflinks. As part of every commission, clients are invited into the workshop to see stages of the piece being created, enabling any changes to be made before the final stage of polishing takes place. 

The Goldsmithy also offer the rare opportunity for anyone having a piece commissioned to have a go at the bench, allowing clients to add their own personal mark-making an extra special experience.
