1. Scotland covers an area just over 30,000 sq. miles, about 1/3 of the total UK overall landmass, however the population of Scotland accounts for about 10% of the UK figure.

2. If border controls are required the Scotland/England border is just under 110 miles long.

3. Scotland can be divided into 3 areas....

  • The Upper Lowlands This is the area that lies just north of the UK/Scotland border.
  • The Central Lowlands This area is the most industrial, urban, and populated, region containing the big urban cities of both Edinburgh and Glasgow.
  • The Highlands & Islands This region covers about 50% of Scotland’s' landmass.

4. There are almost 800 Scottish islands, and only 130 are still inhabited by man.

5. The most northern group of Scotland’s' Islands are the Shetland Isles, as the crow flies they are closer to Oslo in Norway, than they are to London, England!

6. Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland with a population of 486,120 , but Glasgow is bigger in terms of population with 592.820.

7. There are only 7 official cities in Scotland - Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow. Inverness. Perth. and Stirling.

8. The University of St Andrews, was founded in 1413, and is the third oldest university in the UK after Oxford and Cambridge.

9. The highest point in Scotland is the mountain peak of Ben Nevis. It's actually the highest peak in the UK at 1,344 m

10. The longest river in Scotland is the River Tay, at 117 miles in length.
